Aoraki Alpine Lodge sits in Mt Cook Village, inside Aoraki Mount Cook National Park, on Bowen Drive near the Department of Conservation Visitor Centre. It has operated as a family-owned lodge since 2005, offering affordable rooms rather than a big hotel setup, with staff on hand for personal service.

Rooms come with ensuite bathrooms, tea-making facilities and TV, and some look straight out at Aoraki itself. The real draw is the communal kitchen and lounge, which open onto a front deck with a barbecue and a view that takes in the mountain and surrounding bush. There's no Wi-Fi here, which fits the setting: this is a place built around the outdoors rather than screens.

The lodge is walking distance to the start of the Hooker Valley Track, one of the park's best-known day walks, with views of Aoraki and the Mueller and Hooker glaciers along the way. It's also a convenient stop if you're driving the South Island, sitting roughly midway between Christchurch and Queenstown. Scenic flights over the Southern Alps can be arranged from the village as well.

The lodge suits couples and families looking for quiet, straightforward alpine accommodation rather than resort amenities. There's no hot tub, and it isn't pet-friendly. Bookings and inquiries go through the lodge's own website or by phone.
