Clear Lake Cabin Lookout sits above the southern slope of Mt. Hood, inside the Mt. Hood National Forest, with views over snow-covered treetops, an alpine lake and the surrounding Cascade peaks. It's a working-style fire lookout turned overnight rental, reached by Forest Service roads off Highway 26, about 12 miles south of Government Camp.

The setting is secluded and waterfront, with trail access right outside the door and fireplace heat inside — firewood is provided for indoor use. There's no hot tub and no off-grid power setup, and pets aren't allowed, but the combination for the tower, woodshed and gate is sent in the booking confirmation, so arrival is straightforward once you've made the trip up.

Getting there changes with the season. From December 1 through April 30, and whenever winter driving conditions hit, the only way in is by skiing, snowshoeing or snowmobiling 3.5 miles one-way from Skyline Sno-Park, with roughly 900 feet of elevation gain and a three-to-four-hour trek. A sno-park permit is required to leave a car at the trailhead, and those can be bought in the Portland area or at CJ's on Highway 26. Guests handle their own travel logistics and safety in winter, which makes this better suited to those comfortable in backcountry conditions.

Check-in is 3pm, check-out 11am. Reservations run through recreation.gov, and the Barlow Ranger District office, staffed weekdays 8am to 4:30pm, can confirm current road and trail conditions before you head out.
